Ocean Jasper is a hard agate-like chalcedony mined on the east coast of Madagascar near the village of Moravato. Though first discovered in 1922, no information was recorded as to its location. It was rediscovered in 1955 but an incorrect location was recorded. Finally in 1997 the true location was mapped. Renowed for its beauty, variability and rarity it is widely sought after by jewelers and collectors. I bought my first piece ( a beautiful polished slab) in 1999 and have collected choice pieces ever since. This piece is a beautiful example of black-bodied ocean jasper one of the rarest variations. It would make a beautiful neck-piece or a unique addition to a collection,
